Are you just starting out? Do not worry. Here is what you need to know

Avoid Touching Your Face

Touching your face with dirty hands can deposit oil, debris and impurities on your skin, thus causing breakouts and irritation. Unless you are in the shower or working through your skincare routine with clean hands, keep your hands off your face.

Eat a Balanced Diet:

Enrich your diet with essential vitamins and nutrients to maintain overall bodily health, which will also benefit the skin. Try to avoid sugar, oily and fried food as they may hamper your skin health.

Hydrate

Your skin is the largest organ of your body, and it needs to hydrate to get rid of toxins. Drinking water helps your body to flush out impurities through natural processes and thus keeping the skin fresh and hydrated.

8 Hours Of Sleep

The skin repairs itself while you get a good night’s sleep. After a long day of fighting UV rays, pollution, sweat, your skin needs a break. While sleeping, your skin switches itself into recovery mode, thus helping the skin regenerate and repair itself.

Reduce Stress

Stress induced breakouts and inflammation of the skin are a common phenomena today. Even though it is not controllable most of the time, there is no denying that stress and acne are interlinked - so try and keep a check to reduce your stress.

Wash Your Makeup Brushes

Makeup brushes are the breeding ground for germs and bacteria which can cause acne and flare ups, as well as some serious skin infections. Ideally, the brushes should be cleaned once a week with a mild cleanser to ensure your skin’s health.

Wash Your Pillow Cases

Dirt and oil can transfer to pillow cases like any other thing. Changing and washing them regularly will help reduce clogging of pores and blemishes.

Use A Mild Shampoo

If you get acne around your hairline, your shampoo may be the cause.Shampoos, conditioners, gels, mousses and hair sprays all contain ingredients that can clog up pores and cause problems. Use products free from silicone, petroleum etc.

Your Routine

B - Adding New Products To Your Beauty Regime

Got a new, shiny product? But don’t know how to introduce it into your beauty routine? We’ve got some tips for you, check them out.

  • First, introduce one product at a time. This way you’ll be able to know how each product reacts to your skin.
  • Do a patch test. Apply a small amount of product to the skin behind your ear or the inside of your elbow.
  • If your skin becomes red or irritated, whether right away or after a few days, discontinue use and speak to a dermatologist. Certain topicals like retinoids can be uncomfortable at first, it is always better to consult a professional first.
  • Use your product for at least a month before coming to any conclusions.
  • Some products have immediate results while for some, you need to keep patience for 4-6 weeks to assess the long term benefits.
  • Remember, no skincare product is a miracle!
  • The top layer of the epidermis takes a full month to renew itself. A qualitative change can only be observed in the skin after three to four cycles of this turnover.
  • Pay attention to how your skin feels after using a new product.
  • If it is dry, flaky or red and gets even worse after 2-3 weeks, consult your dermatologist again.
  • If your skin feels moisturised and balanced, the product is working.
  • Change your routine gradually, while adding only one new product at a time.
  • Though it may seem attractive to buy a whole new skincare range at a time, it is best advised to incorporate changes gradually. If you add too many ingredients on your skin in one go, it could cause irritation and breakouts.
  • Using one new product at a time can help you combat any breakouts and irritation without having to figure out the reason behind it.
SKIN PURGING

What is it?

Breakouts that occur after using a new skincare product.

How to Identify?

You may have heard “Sometimes when introducing new products, your skin will get worse before it gets better.” When a product works to clear skin, the gunk that has been hiding deep down-like dead skin cells, oil and debris, comes to surface in the form of a breakout. This is called purging.

Can you prevent it?

While introducing new skin care products with active ingredients into your routine, keep the transformation slow. This way, the potential for inflammation is reduced. You can also use lower strength products at first to prevent this as well. Once your skin has adapted, you can gradually build up to higher potencies.

When you introduce new skin care products with active ingredients, purging may happen. Now purging may look a lot like a breakout- as your skin tries to get rid of any impurities, pimples will pop up from deep within and take the shape of acne. But if your skin becomes red, itchy and splotchy, after using a new product, it could be a sign of irritation. This may not be your regular purge, and you’ll have to discontinue using the product and consult your dermatologist.
